Auckland is affectionately known as “The City of Sails” and during a drive along it’s extensive waterfront you will find upward of 700,000 Sail/Power boats moored or lying at anchor and a lengthy promenade if you fancy a walk. The Waitakere Scenic Drive passes through the Centennial Memorial Park (15,800 acres) where many walking tracks are situated. Kelly Tarlton’s Underwater World is a definite must and close by at Mission Bay we found probably the best Fish and Chip shop in the World……The Fish Crock/Pot café style restaurant…superb. Fresh fish daily from local boats. The Auckland Museum houses the largest collection of Polynesian historical artefacts in the world. There are several other Museums, a Zoo and a trip up the Sky Tower (382 Metre) in Victoria Street or drive to the top of Mount Eden (196 Metres) which provides spectacular views over the City and main Harbour. It is also well worth taking the Ferry to Devonport and visiting the many quaint shops that abound. Finally, no visit to Auckland would be complete without a cruise round the Hauraki Golf Maritime Park with an island stop off. “Fullers Water Tours” Tel: (09) 367-9111 serves many of the islands with regular sailings throughout the day. There are 47 islands in the Hauraki Gulf. The more enthusiastic island hoppers might consider chartering a power boat and armed with, and capable of reading a chart, head off and do their own thing! See also WTG Rangitoto (day trippers only), is ideal for walking and you can climb to the volcanic rim (259 Metre) or you can take the tractor train “Volcanic Explorer”. Motutapi Island is connected to Rangitoto by a natural causeway and whilst mainly agricultural can be looped (walking) which takes approx 4 hours. Motuihe and Waiheke Islands are the most popular. Motuike having two long sandy beaches attracts beach lovers and picnickers and is ideal for sailing enthusiasts, whilst Waiheke the further of the two islands has an average population of 6,000 and features accommodations rolling farmland and native bush walks. The main area in Waihehe covers Oneroa to Onetangi with magnificent Palm Beach the main attraction. There are vineries on the island, a Museum and a riding centre situated at Shepherds Point.
